Product Description:
Rustic multi-coloured large vase by one of Singapore’s talented potter, Hairo San. He is a specialist at creating colourful clay compositions using layered glazing and firing techniques. Hairo San’s signature style draws inspiration from South-East Asian cultural traditions. This distinctive vase boasts a strikingly uneven surface that celebrates the beauty found in irregularity. Each swatch of pink, yellow, and green across the surface of this pottery vase demonstrates firing skill to trigger different clay oxidation processes. The repeated firing leaves areas of matte and glossy finish that fuse together in a seamless tactile gradient. Hairo San delves into creating marks, lines and textures using slip and objects such as a metal brush, fork or comb, yet still maintaining form and symmetry in this piece.

Pottery making using stoneware clay and firing it in a gas kiln is a process that marries tradition with modern techniques, resulting in durable, versatile, and beautifully crafted ceramic pieces.
Stoneware Clay: Stoneware clay is a favoured material among potters due to its plasticity, strength, and versatility. Derived from various natural sources, this type of clay possesses high silica content, making it exceptionally durable when fired at high temperatures. It allows artists to create intricate designs and textures, retaining fine details during the forming process.
Handcrafting Process: The journey of crafting stoneware pottery typically begins with the artisan wedging and preparing the clay to remove air bubbles and ensure uniformity. Using traditional hand-building methods or a pottery wheel, the potter shapes the clay into the desired form—be it bowls, vases, mugs, or other vessels. Hand-building techniques often result in unique, irregular shapes, adding character and individuality to each piece.
Firing in a Gas Kiln: The firing process in a gas kiln involves carefully loading the pottery pieces, which have been air-dried to a certain point, into the kiln. The kiln's gas burners create heat, gradually raising the temperature within the chamber. Stoneware clay typically requires high firing temperatures ranging from around 2100 to 2400 degrees Fahrenheit (1150 to 1300 degrees Celsius) to vitrify and become non-porous.
Gas-fired kilns offer precise temperature control, allowing potters to achieve consistent and even firings. During the firing, the clay undergoes various transformations. At high temperatures, the clay matures, becoming durable and less porous. Glazes, if applied, melt and fuse with the pottery, creating unique colours, textures, and finishes.
Resultant Pottery: The outcome of stoneware pottery fired in a gas kiln is a collection of robust, functional, and visually striking pieces. The nature of the firing process can contribute to diverse surface effects, such as subtle variations in glaze colours, captivating textures, and depth in the finish. The combination of stoneware clay's strength and the high firing temperatures results in pottery that is suitable for everyday use, whether it's for serving food or as decorative accents in your living space.
Pottery crafted from stoneware clay and fired in a gas kiln embodies the fusion of artistry and science, producing enduring pieces that reflect the skillful craftsmanship and the innate beauty of this time-honoured ceramic art form.
